History

Phra Somdej Khata Toh Khang Dao (Shooting Star Incantation Somdej)

Material: Sacred Powder (Nur Phong)

Year of Creation: BE 2507 (1964 CE)

Creator: Chao Khun Tieng, Wat Rakang Kositaram, Bangkok

Background and Purpose

  • This amulet was created to honor Somdej Phra Buddhachan Toh Promrangsri, the legendary monk of the Rattanakosin era and spiritual forefather of Wat Rakang.

  • The name “Khata Toh Khang Dao” references the famous protective incantation (khata) attributed to Somdej Toh, which was believed to repel danger like a shooting star (khang dao).

  • Chao Khun Tieng intended this batch to:

    • Pay homage to Somdej Toh

    • Support temple restorations and charitable Buddhist causes

    • Continue the spiritual tradition of the Phra Somdej lineage

Sacred Materials (Nur Phong)

The sacred powder mixture included:

  • Phong Itijay and Phong Puttakhun: Made from old votive tablets from Wat Rakang and affiliated temples

  • Sacred incense ash and candle wax from past ceremonies

  • Crushed herbs and resins traditionally used in Thai Buddhist rituals

  • Powdered palm leaves (Bai Lan) with handwritten yant inscriptions

  • Fragments of Phra Somdej Luang Pu Toh amulets from earlier batches

The blending process followed the traditional Somdej method, with careful selection and repeated blessing of each component.

Blessing and Consecration Ceremony

  • The consecration took place in Wat Rakang, with Chao Khun Tieng presiding over the ritual.

  • The amulets were blessed over a prolonged period through multiple chanting sessions, both public and private.

  • Senior monks from other revered temples were invited to co-consecrate, following Wat Rakang’s ritual standards.

  • The emphasis was placed on invoking the protective power of Somdej Toh’s incantations, especially the Katha Jinapanjara and Katha Yant Maha Amnaj.

Design Characteristics

  • The amulet retains the classical Phra Somdej form: seated Buddha in meditative posture on a tiered throne.

  • A distinctive feature is the subtle starburst or radiating lines motif behind the Buddha image, representing the “shooting star” theme.

  • The surface of the amulet often shows signs of embedded powders, with a natural tone ranging from beige to brownish gray.

  • Many authentic pieces were hand-pressed using traditional wooden molds.

Distribution and Spiritual Beliefs

  • Distributed primarily to donors and supporters of temple projects and Buddhist education funds

  • Spiritual purposes:

    • Protection from dangers, misfortune, and spiritual harm

    • Enhancement of authority, charisma, and moral strength

    • Remembrance of Somdej Toh’s enduring legacy

Legacy and Collector Value

  • This batch is one of the most revered Somdej amulets made under the direct lineage of Wat Rakang in the 2500s era.

  • Regarded as highly collectible, particularly when:

    • Issued directly by Chao Khun Tieng

    • Bearing temple authentication ink or original casing

  • Considered by collectors and devout followers to carry strong Puttakhun energy and a direct link to Somdej Toh’s sacred heritage
