Luang Phor Lampoo Wat Mai Amataros (Wat Bangkhunprom)

Luang Phor Lampoo — Vice Abbot of Wat Bang Khun Phrom (Wat Mai Amataros)

Born in B.E. 2444 (1901 CE) at Amphoe Ta Ruea, Ayutthaya, Lp Lampoo entered monastic life on 1 May B.E. 2465 at Wat Gai Jan. His preceptor was Luang Por Badtr Intachodti of Wat Sadteru, with Phra Atigarn Luean (Wat Thalung Hlek) as Kammavācācariya and Phra Ajarn Tong Dee (Wat Bua Nam) as Anusavanācariya. From the outset he was drawn to the old learning — Khom Agkhara scripts and canonical incantations — treating letters not as decorations but as vows of protection.

In B.E. 2469 he moved to Wat Chang Tong, Ayutthaya, where seven quiet years of Kammathana Vipassana steadied his mind and deepened his command of Puttakom sorcery and Khom. By B.E. 2473 he had completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Buddhist Studies at Wat Nong Khuean Kang, Saraburi.

B.E. 2477 brought him to Wat Bang Khun Phrom in Bangkok. He was first proposed as Vice Abbot in B.E. 2502 and, true to his modest temperament, declined and nominated a younger monk. A decade later, in B.E. 2512, he accepted the post, serving with the same quiet discipline he showed in meditation halls.

Elders still tell the story of B.E. 2500, when the Chedi Yai Gru at Wat Bang Khun Phrom was opened and the historic Phra Somdej of Somdej Phra Phutthachan (Toh) Prohmrangsri were ceremonially distributed. After the official allocation, fragments — chipped shoulders, flaked bases, hairline cracks — remained. Devotees assumed they were destined for storage. Lp Lampoo quietly asked permission to take custody. That evening, by lamplight, he ground the pieces into fine powder, added sacred powders gathered from venerable teachers and shrines, and pressed them anew according to the original tamra (design tradition) of Somdej Toh. Villagers recall the moment he lifted the first newly cast tablet: “Old merit becomes new refuge,” he said — not selling a single piece, only reforming and returning merit to the faithful.

Those recast Somdej appeared in both light Phong Wahn and the revered black Pong Bailan (carbonized scripture ash). For collectors they exemplify continuity; for wearers they are living prayers.

Lp Lampoo passed on 1 September B.E. 2533 (1990). His body was enshrined at Wat Bang Khun Phrom for public homage, then transferred to Wat Gai Jan, Ayutthaya. For nearly two decades there were no signs of decay — a fact spoken of in whispers as evidence of uncommon purity. A royal cremation was finally held on 14 November B.E. 2552 at 16:00.
