Luang Pu Kliang Manunyo, also known as Phra Khru Phisit Chalopkan, was a distinguished monk and former abbot of Wat Noen Suthawas in Chonburi Province, Thailand. Renowned for his profound knowledge of Buddhism and expertise in traditional Thai magic, he was a highly respected figure in the region.


Early Life and Ordination

  • Birth: Born as Kliang Suthipong on June 20, 1918, in Ban Moo 10, Nong Khang Khok Subdistrict, Chonburi Province.
  • Parents: Son of Mr. Pleang and Mrs. Niam Suthipong.
  • Education: Attended Wat Noen Elementary School and later studied at Wat Phasukaram.
  • Ordination:
    • Ordained at Wat Noen Suthawat on July 2, 1939.
    • Received the monastic name Manunyo.
    • His preceptor was Phra Khru Sri Satya Phiwat, the abbot of Wat Ton Son.
  • Religious Studies: Successfully passed the Dhamma examinations at the Tri, Tho, and Ek levels.

Leadership and Contributions

  • Abbacy: Became acting abbot after five years of monkhood and was officially appointed abbot of Wat Noen Suthawas on October 1, 1944.
  • Ecclesiastical Titles:
    • 1966: Phra Khru Sanyabat, 3rd class.
    • Later promoted to 2nd and 1st class in the same royal title.
  • Spiritual Activities:
    • Established meditation training for monks, novices, and laypeople.
    • Organized sessions on Buddhist holy days and special occasions such as Visakha Bucha Day.
  • Educational Contributions:
    • Founded a Pali studies school in 1962.
    • Introduced Dhamma teachings at Chonburi Central Prison in 1960.
    • Supported the school lunch program at Wat Noen Suthawat Municipality School.

Sacred Objects and Amulets

  • Amulet Creation: Produced sacred objects across three eras:
    • First Era (1949–1968)
    • Middle Era (1969–1988)
    • Present Era (1989 onwards)
  • Popular Amulets: Coins, powder amulets, and Phra Pidta amulets, with the Hanuman amulet being particularly revered for its powerful Buddhist virtues.
  • Proceeds: Income from amulets was used to develop the community and enhance Wat Noen Suthawas.

Passing and Legacy

  • Death: Passed away on July 2, 2017, at 8:35 p.m. at Chonburi Hospital, aged 99, after 78 years in monkhood.
  • Legacy:
    • Devoted his life to Buddhism and community development.
    • His sacred objects and teachings continue to inspire faith and respect among devotees.
    • Annually commemorated for his contributions to Chonburi Province and Thai Buddhism.
