1. Background and Significance

Phra Mahesuan is one of Thailand’s most iconic double-sided Buddha amulets, traditionally representing dual protective and auspicious power. Its origin traces back to the Sukhothai and early Ayutthaya periods, known for amulets that feature Buddha images on both the front and the reverse sides — symbolizing omnipresent protection and universal benevolence.

The B.E. 2555 edition was created to commemorate and revive the sacred legacy of this historical amulet and was commissioned by Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat, one of the most important and ancient temples in Southern Thailand.

2. Amulet Design and Material

  • Front Side: Buddha image seated in the Mara Vichai (subduing Mara) posture — signifying victory over evil and personal inner strength.

  • Back Side: Another Buddha image in a peaceful meditative pose — embodying tranquility and spiritual wisdom.

  • Material: Nur Chin Ngern — a silver-alloy blend with sacred metals from various past ceremonies and old amulet remnants.

  • Size: Standard ceremonial size

  • Appearance: Smooth silver tone, aged finish with temple-style casting marks, and intricate detail on both sides.

3. Blessing Ceremony and Monastic Participation

The amulets were blessed in a grand Buddha Abhiseka ceremony at Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat. This was a significant ritual involving a lineup of highly respected monks from across the country, including:

  • Luang Pu Pong, a senior monk known for his high meditation power and chanting efficacy.

  • Luang Phor Ruay, a widely revered monk known for his sacred consecration abilities.

  • Other venerated monks from Southern and Central Thailand participated, adding to the sanctity and spiritual potency of the batch.

4. Purpose of Creation

This edition was made to:

  • Raise funds for the renovation of sacred structures and Buddhist schools under the temple’s patronage.

  • Promote national heritage conservation by reintroducing the Mahesuan design with enhanced sacred power.

  • Serve as spiritual protection and a beacon of luck, business success, and spiritual clarity for its owners.

5. Spiritual Benefits

Phra Mahesuan is believed to provide:

  • Klaew Klaad: Protection from harm and danger

  • Maha Amnaj: Authority and influence

  • Maha Lap: Wealth and prosperity

  • Metta Mahaniyom: Attractiveness and charisma

  • Dual Protection: Energy from both faces amplifies safeguarding effects
