Background and Purpose
Wat Bowonniwet Vihara is a centrally important Thai temple, especially for the royal and Dhammayuttika Nikaya lineage . In B.E. 2528, Phra Yanasangwon initiated a dedicated batch of Phra Pidta amulets—the first edition—both as a fundraiser for temple restoration and as a merit-making opportunity for devotees during his tenure.
Design and Iconography
-
Front: Features the classic Phra Pidta posture – the Buddha (or revered monk figure) with both hands covering the eyes, symbolizing protection from evil, inward meditation, and closure of the six senses.
-
Back: May include simple temple stamps, embossing, or inscriptions, typically indicating the Roon Rae batch and the temple’s name.
Material: Nur Phong Bailan
The amulets were pressed from a sacred black powder (Nur Phong Bailan) comprising:
-
Charred or pulverized palm-leaf Buddhist scriptures
-
Sacred powders from ancient amulets and old temple molds
-
Incense ash and candle wax used during temple-wide merit-making activities
-
Pollens and soil from the temple’s hallowed grounds
This proprietary mixture produced a deep gray to black finish with an earthy, non-reflective texture, embodying solemnity and spiritual depth.
Consecration Ceremony
The first-edition amulets were blessed in a solemn but focused consecration ceremony at Wat Bowonniwet in B.E. 2528:
-
Led by Phra Yanasangwon, the Supreme Patriarch, thus marking them as highly authoritative.
-
Conducted with long recitations of protective and merit-making Pali chants.
-
Infused with meditative blessings, utilizing samadhi focus by Phra Yanasangwon and senior monks to empower the batch spiritually.
Believed Properties
Phra Pidta amulets from this batch are traditionally sought for:
-
Protection (Klaew Klād): Against misfortune, hazards, and unseen threats.
-
Metta (Metta Mahaniyom): Attracting goodwill, social favor, and harmony.
-
Spiritual Shielding: Defense against harmful energies, black magic, and astral disturbances.
As the first batch blessed by the highest monastic authority, these amulets hold an esteemed place among devotees.
Rarity and Collectibility
-
B.E. 2528 is the “Roon Rae” (First Edition)—rarer and more valued compared to later runs.
-
Items from this batch, authenticated by temple-issued stamps or packaging, are highly prized by collectors and bearers.
-
Pieces in excellent condition without damage or erosion are considered significant investments in both spiritual and historical value.
